Engine Coolant Water Pump

Blades on the pump force coolant to flow through the engine and back to the radiator to be cooled by a forced air cooling fan. It is pumped into the warm engine block where it picks up some heat.

The water pump uses centrifugal force to send fluid to the outside while it spins causing fluid to be drawn from the center continuously. Directing water to circulate only through the engine allows the engine to reach optimum operating temperature as quickly as possible whilst avoiding localised hot spots. The pump vanes fling the fluid to the outside of the pump where it can enter the engine. It is an impeller pump and is usually buried under the timing belt cover on the side of the engine.
